Scuba diving in Holguin
Scuba diving is one of the most popular watersport activity in Holguin. The Eagle Ray Diving Center is located on Playa Guardalavaca. From there, you will have the opportunity to dive in the old Bahamas channel and discover several underwater sites.
Depth varies from 5 to 40 meters with many formation like coral barriers, tall crags, cozy dales,vertical walls or beautiful cliffs, some with walls opening into abyss. The first dive is at 9h (30 meters max.), the following at 11h (15 meters max.) and it is possible to make a third dive at 14h.
PLEASE note that you must arrive fifteen minutes before your dive, to get your gear ready before the diver's meeting that you must attempt if you want to dive. During the meeting, you will learn about the site that you are going to go, the depths and dive plan and, of course, the safety like the hand signals that will be used during the excursion.
The dive shops are ACUC certified, and they are offering scuba courses for new divers. ACUC is Canadian company, and their certifications are accepted worldwide. It is important to note that PADI certifications are not available in Cuba. However, ACUC certification is transferable to PADI. Dive shops are open every day except on Sunday. If you are not certified, you may dive after a short course, BUT in 10 meters depth limit.
Water temperature range between 24C and 29C, so you can dive in a wetsuit (lycra or neoprene of 1/10 inch). Average horizontal visibility is about 30 meters. The tides and currents on North and South coasts are negligible. Facilities at the diving centers include instructors trained in underwater rescue operations.
Cuba has few hyperbaric chambers and specialized medical assistance 24 hours a day, all year round. The health care in Cuba is highly professional and recognized worldwide. The scuba diving in Cuba is based on the conservation of the underwater ecosystems, many have been declared protected areas. Instructor must be present in every dives. You must produce a certificate attesting your expertise in scuba diving.

There are more than 3,000 kilometers of protected coral reefs in Cuba. Home of 38,000 species of crustaceans, 1,500 species of mollusks, 700 species of fish, 300 species of sponges, starfish, sea cucumbers, sea urchins and beautiful coral reefs. There are also five species of marine turtles and mammals like dolphins and manatees.

Note: You can pay at the end of your diving. However if you are not sure how many dives you will book, you may leave your Credit Card at the office and pay when you are ready. You may also prepay your dives. Do not worry, they will reimbursed the dives that you did not complete.

Casa Coral (10 meters)
A coral barrier with abundant fauna, small coral fish, coral species and large gorgonians and sea fans are the main feature of this site.
La Corona (40 meters)
The site has a semi-circular coral formation resembling a crown (corona in spanish). There are gorgonians, corals, sponges, medium and large fish.
Canto Bonito (35 meters)
There is a wall that drops from a depth of 15 meters, abounding in lobster, crab, octopus and myriads of coral fish.
Pesquero (40 meters)
A coral bed with sponges, gorgonians and fish. Its main attraction: several colonies of the highly valued black coral.
La Cadena (40 meters)
There is a chain with large links that span the entrance route from East to West. The area has invertebrates that have made it their home.
