Discover the beautiful province of Holguín !
We visited Holguin for the first time in 2005. After visiting almost every region of this beautiful Caribbean island, we are now in the eastern part, the cradle of Cuban music. It Is a charming place with lush vegetations and nice beaches. Holguin is known for its wide variety of ecotourism excursions.
There are ten « all-inclusive » hotels in Holguin, distributed on six different beaches. The hotels are rated from 2½-star up to the luxurious Paradisus Rio de Oro (5-star) located on the best beach of Holguin, Playa Esmeralda.
Holguin is divided into 14 municipalities and hotels are clustered in the municipality of Rafael Freyre.
The beaches of Holguin are dense enough for walkers. There is no long continuous beach in Holguin, the longest is Playa Pesquero in the western sector of the hotel zone.
Although Holguin is not considered as a little paradise for diving, there are some good places for snorkeling, like the areas of Playa Esmeralda (East facing the Paradisus) and Playa Pesquero (North facinf Blau Costa Verde). We tried the snorkeling in both areas. Visit the snorkeling (and diving) section of our website.
Click HERE to see a © Google Earth satellite image (800x600 pixels, 100 KB) of the hotels sector of Holguin which I have indicated the position of the hotels, dolphinarium, marina. etc.. It gives you an overview of this area of Cuba.
Holguin is the third largest city in Cuba after Havana and Santiago de Cuba. It is located in the north-east of the island. Its main cities are Holguin (the capital), Banes, Antilla, Mayarí, and Moa. The province has a population of just over one million people. Its territory covers over 9,300 km2 of which 25 percent is covered by forest.

Christopher Columbus landed in what is believed to have been the province of Holguin today, in October 27, 1492. He said he was « the eyes of the most beautiful country that man has ever seen ». The province of Holguin was founded in 1978, when it was split off the region of Oriente, which included the current provinces of Santiago de Cuba, Las Tunas, Granma, Holguin and Guantanamo.
Visit the new section Royal Service of the Paradisus Rio de Oro. Very impressive!
Lily and I are owners of the domain name holguincuba.net and many other sites. Visit the info page of our presence on the web to see all our travel sites under the name destilino.com. The original site of holguincuba.net was put online for the first time in May 2005. Following five years of existence, the site was due for a major upgrade, especially since the site was in a web format called « frames » that is not used in most recent websites due to lack of flexibility. An important point in this new version is the inclusion of a dedicated photo album to facilitate navigation among the hundreds of photos.
